Strategy begins before the calendar
A list of platforms and posting frequencies is an execution plan, not a strategy. Strategy explains which audiences matter, what the brand should become known for, how content changes perception and which business journey social can realistically support.
Choose channels according to audience behaviour, format fit, team capability and distribution options. Being inactive on an irrelevant platform is usually less damaging than maintaining a generic presence that nobody can distinguish.
Create a system of recognisable ideas
Develop content pillars from customer questions, category tensions, expertise and brand personality. Turn them into recurring formats that people can recognise, while leaving room to respond to culture and current events when the brand has something relevant to add.
Plan creation and distribution together. Strong organic content can inform paid amplification; campaign questions can inspire educational posts; community responses can reveal language for landing pages and sales material.
- Define audience, role and outcome per channel.
- Create repeatable pillars and native formats.
- Plan production capacity before cadence.
- Connect community insight to the wider journey.
Measure the role social actually plays
Use platform metrics to understand attention and response, then connect appropriate actions to site behaviour, enquiries, retention or research. Not every post should generate a lead, but every format should have a reason to exist.
Review themes and formats rather than judging isolated posts. Social performance is noisy; a useful operating rhythm learns from repeated patterns without allowing a viral outlier to redefine the entire brand.
